To evaluate the behaviour of systems where one or more service nodes are visited by one or more streams of demands, it is often necessary to distinguish the customer's view of the system from that of a 'random observer'. This talk will survey the relationship between the two, with particular reference to topics such as PASTA (Poisson Arrivals See Time Averages) and ASTA (Arrivals See Time Averages). Much of the discussion will cover results that have been known for some time but have not, perhaps, been universally understood. Some new developments will also be described.
