Webcast Trial Page

Overview

This page is a temporary home for information related to the Database Group/DCC seminars which have been webcast and archived for later viewing.

This is a trial service for broadcasting Database Group/DCC/Informatics talks over the Web, as well as archiving them for later perusal. For the time being, we are using a solution provided by MALTS which broadcasts the talk as a Windows Media stream. Thus, you need the capability to view Windows Media Video to view the talk.

Some Linux users have been successful in viewing the webcasts using MPlayer; it may be necessary to download extra Windows Media codecs. Viewing also appears possible in Mac OS X, but Flip4Mac has been reported not to work; the other alternative appears to be Windows Media Player 9 Series for Mac OS X.

The broadcasts typically begin around 4pm, GMT, and end around 5pm.

The past webcasts are available at the following links:

Feedback

We request that anyone participating in the second trial run remotely please send any feedback, including short answers to the following questions. Feedback on the archived video would also be valuable. Please send any comments to jcheney @ inf.ed.ac.uk.

  1. How acceptable was the webcast as a whole, as a substitute for being at the talk?
  2. In the second trial, we attempted to provide remote viewers with the ability to ask questions using email. Did you send a question? If so, please comment on on this email-based question system.
  3. Please comment on any technical areas, eg audio quality, clarity of the slide presentation and video image, that you feel might need improvement.
